FAQs
1. What is ghee?
Ghee is clarified butter. That means butter has been melted and all of the milk solids and whey have been removed.
2. What type of butter is used?
Golden Ghee is made with U.S. grade AA unsalted butter. That’s it!
U.S. Grade AA butter conforms to the following: Possesses a fine and highly pleasing butter flavor. May possess a slight feed and a definite cooked flavor. It is made from sweet cream of low natural acid to which a culture (starter) may or may not have been added. The permitted total disratings in body, color, and salt characteristics are limited to one-half (½). For detailed specifications and classification of flavor characteristics see Table I, and for body, color, and salt characteristics and disratings see Table II.
3. What makes Golden Ghee special?
Golden Ghee is small-batch ghee. We pay attention to every details, cooking small quantities of ghee for hours without rushing the process. The milk solids “toast” the ghee and make for a darker, caramelized flavor. Some customers say it reminds them of nuts, toast, popcorn, caramel, brown butter, or maple syrup.
Golden Ghee is then double-strained for clarity and to ensure all milk solids and particulates are removed. The end result is “Liquid Gold”.
4. How do I use Golden Ghee?
You use ghee just like butter, but since all milk solids have been removed it is “free from lactose” and makes a healthy, non-dairy fat. It has a high “smoke point” so you can sauté with it at high heats without burning. We like Golden Ghee in our morning bullet proof coffee (aka “butter coffee), on a baked potato, cooked into scrambled eggs, served on veggies and it will blow your mind on hot popcorn!
5. How do I store Golden Ghee?
Because the milk solids have been removed, ghee behaves like oil and can be stored at room temperature. You do not need to refrigerate it, but there is no harm to the ghee if you choose to refrigerate it. We keep it on our kitchen counter ready to use throughput the day!
6. How long can I keep ghee?
Ghee can be stored, unopened, in a cool, dark, not-necessarily-refrigerated place for 9 months. Once opened, a jar can be kept on your counter top for 3 months.
